When choosing a new railing for a balcony, loggia or terrace, sooner or later you face a fundamental question: proven steel or modern aluminium? Both solutions have their supporters and both can perform reliably. The important difference is that aluminium railings and steel railings behave very differently in the areas apartment owners care about most: corrosion resistance, maintenance requirements and actual service life. Choosing the material is therefore a decision for decades, not one season. Steel railings: a proven tradition with ongoing maintenance

Steel railings are a familiar sight on older balconies throughout Slovakia. They have clear strengths, but also weaknesses that usually become apparent only after several years.

Advantages of steel railings

Steel is exceptionally strong and stiff, which allows slim profiles even across large spans. It is also well suited to forged and decorative elements, so it is difficult to replace when a historic or ornate appearance with hand-forged details is required. Simple designs can have a lower initial price, and local damage can often be welded and repaired on site.

Disadvantages of steel railings

The greatest weakness of steel is corrosion. Once the protective layer is damaged by a scratch, abrasion or ageing, the metal underneath begins to rust. Welds, joints and anchoring points where moisture can collect are particularly vulnerable. A steel railing therefore requires regular inspection, removal of rust and repainting every few years. Its high weight is another disadvantage: steel is roughly three times heavier than aluminium, placing greater loads on both the structure and its anchors. Hot-dip galvanising combined with a high-quality coating can extend the service life considerably, but no protective system lasts forever and any damaged area can become the starting point for corrosion. Advantages of aluminium railings

Aluminium's greatest advantage is its natural resistance to corrosion. A thin but robust oxide layer forms spontaneously on the surface and protects the metal from further exposure to moisture; aluminium simply does not rust in the way steel does. Disadvantages of aluminium railings

Aluminium is also less stiff than steel, so the profiles must be correctly sized; however, that is a design responsibility for the manufacturer, not a disadvantage the customer needs to solve. Finally, aluminium is better suited to clean, modern designs than to hand-forged decorative motifs. For the vast majority of apartment buildings and houses, these are minor compromises compared with the long-term savings in maintenance.

This is where aluminium has a clear advantage. Its passive oxide layer withstands moisture and changing weather without rusting. Maintenance

An aluminium railing generally needs only occasional washing with water and a mild detergent, together with periodic visual checks of anchors and seals. A steel railing requires active care: regular inspection, removal of rust and repeated painting. Weight and structural load

Aluminium is approximately three times lighter than steel.
